Framing, the Big Tonic way:

Sustainable from start to finish

At Big Tonic Framing, we care about the materials we use — and where they come from. That’s why we offer a carefully chosen range of sustainably sourced solid woods for our custom frames, including black walnut, oak, ash, poplar, lime, pine, beech, obeche, and ayous.

You won’t find any veneered, MDF or polystyrene-core mouldings here — just beautiful, natural timber with real character.

We also select all our other materials - mountboards, backings, tapes, papers, and even flyers & posters — for their quality and eco credentials, so your frame is sustainable through and through.

Fully bespoke and artisan

Every frame we make is custom-built and finished by hand in our Bristol workshop — no shortcuts, no mass production. From sanding and prepping to colour-matching, it’s all done with care and attention to detail.

Choose from a wide range of artisan finishes, including waxes, stains, and paints — or let us create a custom-mixed colour just for your piece.

We’re also working on offering gilded frame options, coming soon for those seeking something truly luminous.

Care and Conservation

With extensive experience in handling artworks and objects of all values (both monetary & sentimental) we offer advice to match the piece, budget and frame design.

During your consultation you will be offered advice and guidance to help select the appropriate conservation level from our glazing types, mountboards and mounting/floating options.

Whether it’s an oil painting or a family photo, each object will be treated with the same level of care and respect.
